The company's Environmental Specialist is a critical support partner for the plant environmental department. The primary responsibilities are to lead plant discussions and investigations to improve throughput, efficiency, quality, and environmental performance. This is completed through data analysis, field measurements, audits, environmental awareness training programs and conversations with employees to diagnose issues and develop solutions. Supports a good standing in the community, sustainable operations, and adheres to and upholds all company policies, safety standards and federal / state regulations.

Role & Responsibilities

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, or closely related field. Understanding of environmental sampling and data interpretation and regulatory environmental compliance requirements.
  • Knowledge of auditing and inspection expectations with federal, state, and local environmental regulators / agencies such as EPA, IDNR, County Health Department, etc.
  • High level of accountability and commitment to compliance, record keeping and overall team results.
  • Must have a high level of integrity and commitment to comply with all applicable federal / state / industry compliance, regulations and standards.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suites with accurate data entry skills.
  • Due to the nature of this position, it is essential that the teammate be available to report to the designated work site / office and be ready to begin work when scheduled, including the ability to travel 10% with or without notice. •    Make positive contributions to the plant safety activities and initiatives.
  • Executes responsibilities in compliance with plant rules, MSHA regulations, company policies and the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Participate in conducting inspections, audits, and investigations; report environmental incidents, compiling findings, and recommendations for corrective action through root cause analysis findings.
  • Collect environmental samples and field measurements.
  • Develop site-specific health and safety protocols such as spill contingency plans and/or methods for loading or transporting waste.
  • Understands strategies, priorities, and optimization techniques and assists the plant in attainment of plant and Company objectives.
  • Evaluates operations, processes, and trends using audits and systematic approaches.
  • Applies professional engineering competence with specialized knowledge of chemistry and biological science to identify, measure, and control sources of air, water and land pollution.
  • Designs, implements, regulates and measures the effectiveness of all processes related to environmental compliance and protection.
  • Utilize problem solving skills to develop solutions that help their organizations meet environmental regulations.
  • Assist in evaluating environmental issues and/or concerns, raise awareness, and lead resolution through collaboration of environmental strategies.  
  • Assists in reporting metrics for required permitting and key reporting compliance; analyze environmental monitoring data and prepare compliance reports. 
  • Utilize Environmental Management System (EMS), maintain dashboard and calendar of compliance tasks.  
  • Assists in coordination and training of teammates in the identification, development and implementation of environmental goals, policies, and procedures, which have a positive impact and add value to the organization.
  • Attend public hearings, conferences and events on environmental issues as requested by the Company.  
  • Assists in organization-wide environmental sustainability goals and tracks ESG data as required.
  • Unfailing commitment to follow all safety procedures, perform risk assessments prior to commencing unfamiliar tasks, and seek to identify and implement proactive safety and environmental improvements.
  • Maintains compliance with MSHA and environmental laws and regulations.
  • Assist Environmental Manager in management of plant issues (air quality, SPCC, SWPPP, MACT, etc.) through record keeping, instrument maintenance, and testing.
  • Other duties may be required and will be assigned as necessary.
